The main advantages of the 213nm laser for Raman Spectrometry:

· Increased sensitivity can result from UV excitation, since even non-resonance Raman scattering efficiency is proportional to λ-4, where λ is the laser wavelength. For example, Raman scattering at 213 nm is a factor of 184 more efficient than that at 785 nm.
· UV excitation can give multiple rises to specific resonance enhancement (Resonance Raman Spectroscopy) with biological moieties, particularly protein, DNA and RNA structures, guaranteeing high selectivity and sensitivity.
· Fluorescence suppression can often be assisted using UV lasers, by spectrally separating the Raman and fluorescence signatures. With UV excitation the Raman spectrum lies close to the laser line, whereas the fluorescence is often slightly removed to higher wavelengths.
· The important advantage of operating in the deep UV is that there is the lack of background irradiation of samples due to solar irradiation or artificial lighting. This is helpful in a laboratory environment, but is especially advantageous for measurements in outdoor environments during full sunlight.
· Raman resonance enhancement (for λ < 230 nm) occurs only within the Raman bands associated with the electronic transition. It allows simplifying an interpretation of results (in particular for drug trial), which often include complex overlapping band structures for organic and biological materials with normal Raman scattering.
